1 Tawang Monastery, SikkimThe Tawang Monastery is the biggest Monastery in India and second largest monastery in the world. Tawang Monastery also popular by the name of Galden Namgey Lhatse dates back 400 years and is located above the Tawang town near Bhutan border at a height of 3500 metres above the sea level. The monastery was founded by the Mera Lama Lodre Gyasto in 17 century AD and it houses a 29 feet tall Buddha made of gold.
2 Bodhimanda Vihara Monastery, BhodgayaBodhimanda Vihara Monastery is one of the most famous and visited Buddhist monestary in India. Bodhimanda Vihara now known as the Mahabodhi Temple is located in Gaya district of Bihar state. For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is one of the four most important pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha with the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. It's now an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
