Often referred to as ‘Holy Ganga’; the beloved Ganges tops the list of the most polluted rivers in India. Ganga not only tops the list of most polluted river in India; but also occupies second place in the World next to China's Yangtze River. The river contains toxins, bacteria and other dangerous chemicals at an alarming rate. The level of pollution in river Ganga is 3,000 times higher than the permissible limits of WHO.
The second on the list of the most polluted rivers in India is Yamuna. The river, which once had clear blue water, is facing dangerous levels of pollution today. Delhi is the major reason behind Yamuna’s woeful condition; as Delhi itself dumps 58% waste in Yamuna!
3 Sabarmathi River
The Sabarmati River is one of the biggest and major river of Gujarat that runs through two major cities of Gujarat, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. As per the CPCB report, the water in it is so egregiously polluted that it’s unfit to drink or bath. The river has 2.8 million MPN (most probable number) of fecal coliform in every 100 ml of water. The contamination is due to perennial waste discharges from municipal drainage and industries.
4 Damodar River
Damodar River flows across the mineral rich Indian states of West Bengal and Jharkhand and occupies forth spot in this list. Discharge of uncontrolled and untreated industrial wastewater, often containing highly toxic metals, is the major source of pollution of Damodar river.
5 Bagmati River
Bagmati River near the Pashupatinath temple is considered holy by both Hindus and Buddhists. But this river is highly polluted mainly due to filth. Large amounts of untreated sewage, and large levels of pollution of the river exist due primarily to the region's large population.
