1 Baby Throwing, India
The bizarre ritual of throwing newborn babies from 50 feet tower and catching them in a cloth has been celebrated in India since last 700 years. It is practised by couples who are blessed with a child after taking a vow at the Sri Santeswar temple near Indi, in the state of Karnataka. The ritual is observed by both Muslims and Hindus every year and takes place amid tight security. The ritual takes place in the first week of December, and is believed to bring health, prosperity and luck to new arrivals. Around 200 babies are dropped by their parents every year while crowds sing and dance. Most of the infants are under two years old.
2 Living with the Dead, Indonesia
On the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the Torajan people unearth the bodies of their loved ones who have died every year, when they do they clean the bodies and they walk the bodies back to their homes. Before they’re taken home they are dressed in special clothes and then they are paraded around town. Even people who died decades ago are part of the ceremony. When the corpses are taken from their coffins, they are completely cleaned out. After the ceremony the corpses are taken back to their final resting place, but first they’re put in new clothes.
While cannibalism is illegal in most parts of the world, there are still remote areas where the residents eat people. A tribe in Venezuela and Brazil, known as ‘The Yanomami Tribe’ will eat their dead. They start by grinding the bones and after 45 days they drink the bone dust in a banana soup. A year later they will consume the ashes of the burnt flesh. They believe that by ingesting the remains of a love one, his spirit will live within them forever.
4 Severing The Tongue
This is one of the most terrifying traditions around the world. In this ancient Asian tradition, teenage girls are dressed up in beautiful garments and they lay on a table. The village people would cut off the tip of her tongue this is done to ensure a happy marriage one day.
5 Foot Binding, China
In a bizarre tradition in China, the foot of a young girl of 4-5 years is binded to prevent the growing of the foot. This was done starting from a very young age because of how soft the bones are at that age. The girl with binded foot cannot walk, run, work or jump. The tradition is not for any omen, religious value or to stay away from evils. This tradition is a sign of beauty and sensuality, it was believed that small foot makes a girl look more beautiful.
